Why Every Driver Should Have a Dash Cam: Our Talk at BNI Synergy in Wellington

Shannon J. Sagan of The Dash Cam Lawyer presenting on why dash cams are so important at BNI Synergy in Wellington

By Shannon J. Sagan, Esq., The Dash Cam Lawyer®, Fla. Bar #10793

In October, The Dash Cam Lawyer® presented at a meeting of BNI Synergy, the BNI chapter that meets in the Wellington area of Palm Beach County. Shannon gave his 10-minute feature presentation to the chapter on one topic he talks about every day: why every driver should have a dash cam, and what that footage can do after a crash.

Going forward, Shannon will also give the educational presentation at each BNI Synergy meeting, so chapter members will hear a short, practical lesson every time they meet.

What Shannon covered

Why dash cams are so important. After a crash, what happened often comes down to one driver’s account against another’s. A dash cam records what the camera saw, with a date and time stamp, before memories fade or stories change.

Real dash cam footage. Shannon played several dash cam videos from cases the firm has handled, all of them cases that have been resolved. He walked the room through what the footage showed and why it mattered once the claim was underway.

Why he became a lawyer. Shannon shared the personal story behind why he went into law, and a bit about his background and how the firm works with injured people across Palm Beach County. (Here’s more on working with a local Palm Beach County lawyer.)

Why dash cam footage matters in Florida

Since March 2023, Florida has used a modified comparative negligence rule for most negligence cases. If an injured person is found to be more than 50% at fault, they generally cannot recover damages from the other driver. If they’re 50% or less at fault, their recovery is reduced by their share of the fault.

That makes the question of who did what more important than ever, and it’s exactly the question a dash cam helps answer. Footage can show who had the light, how fast vehicles were moving, whether someone changed lanes without looking, and what the road and weather looked like at the moment of impact. Here’s more on dash cam footage after a truck crash.

Quick dash cam tips for Palm Beach County drivers

  • Front and rear coverage. Stop-and-go traffic on busy roads like State Road 7 and Southern Boulevard is where many rear-end crashes start. A rear camera captures what a front-only camera can’t.
  • Use a high-endurance memory card. Dash cams write to the card constantly. Cards made for continuous recording last longer and fail less often.
  • Check the date and time. Set the clock correctly and check it after battery changes or updates. An accurate time stamp makes footage easier to rely on.
  • Know how your camera saves clips. Most dash cams loop-record and overwrite older video. Many lock a clip automatically when they sense an impact, and most have a button to save a clip by hand.
  • Mind the audio. Florida generally requires the consent of everyone in a private conversation before it’s recorded. If your camera records sound inside the car, tell your passengers, or turn audio off.
  • Save footage right away after a crash. Download it to your phone or computer, back it up, and don’t edit it. Keep the original file.

Frequently asked questions

What is BNI Synergy?

BNI Synergy is a chapter of BNI (Business Network International) that is part of BNI South Florida and serves the Wellington area of Palm Beach County. Members are local business owners and professionals who meet regularly to share referrals.

What did The Dash Cam Lawyer® present at BNI Synergy?

Shannon J. Sagan gave a 10-minute presentation on why every driver should have a dash cam. He showed dash cam footage from resolved cases and explained why footage matters after a crash.

Will The Dash Cam Lawyer® keep presenting at BNI Synergy?

Yes. Shannon now gives the educational presentation at each BNI Synergy meeting.

Does dash cam footage help after a car accident in Florida?

It can. Under Florida’s modified comparative negligence rule, an injured person who is found more than 50% at fault generally can’t recover damages. Clear footage of what happened can help show who was at fault.

What should I do with my dash cam footage after a crash?

Save it as soon as it’s safe. Download the original file, make a backup, and don’t edit or trim it. Many cameras overwrite older video automatically, so waiting can mean losing it.

Is it legal to record audio with a dash cam in Florida?

Florida generally requires all parties’ consent to record a private conversation. If your dash cam records audio inside your car, let your passengers know or turn the audio off.
